Research In Digital Artist: Cory Arcangel

Review:
................. EeeeeeeeeeeeRrrrrrrMmmmmmmm........

WTF!

Research In Digital Artists: Carlos Amorales

Carlos Amorales is a digital art worker who uses dark mystical contrasty images in his work, which is what I will be going for.
Here are some of his images.

This is the dark and misty scene I would be going for. I like the contrast, silhouette of the wolves and the bird on the fence.

This image is dark and silhouette like as well. His images are very unique and different.

This is a very strange and beautiful creating from Amorales. He has a thing with butterflies but I don't know what exactly XD. This must obviously take time and effort. I like the way the black butterflies sticks of the image from the white background.

Creating a Cross Processed Image in Photoshop

This is the first and normal basic JPEG.
This is the photoshoped image this basically tints the image and stylises it.

Coloured sketch. With photoshop

This is my first coloured sketch (coloured on photoshop) . This will give you the basic idea of what it will look like but much better of course.
The lighting will be soft coming from the from top right as seen on the image bellow.

My Sketches

*1 person in all in black in an alley with lighting (preferably soft boxed) coming from the back of him.
Giving him a shadow in-front.

*2 Man looking into mirror at himself in pop art effect, white back ground, light
coming directly in front of the normal person.
*3 Microphone with the head created out of collages all on a green misty
background with a few dark contrasty back grounds aswell.

My Idea So Far. (BRAINSTORM #1)

For my first idea I want to try and create a few dark, emotional, deep and impacting album covers but using really dull colours. Thsi would be really hard to do in a pop art effect like Julian Opie has done, Because pop art is really bold, bright and stands out alot. So to accomplish this would be great but hard.
I feel I need to show a number of different techniques to see whats best.
These are the techniques I will try:
  1. Collage - different pieces of magazines, newspapers and articles of the person or object and put into one image.
  2. Pop Art - But dark and emotional.
  3. Abstract collage - a series of images of the same person put into one image.
I will post these on my blog to show and see what others think.

Notorious B.I.G Album Covers

This is Biggie Smalls' Album cover for Duets. Elizabeth Rosen created this Piece, kind of like a Collage which is what she specialises in including, Matte painting, Fat paintings, Dimensional Multi-media and many others.

My Julian Opie Image

This is my first attempt on my Julian Opie, I done this before my other Pop Art attempts,
I used the pen tool to draw around the image on a new layer and used stroke path to
draw the line so it looks like me.
I done this with the rest of the body parts and outlining, then used the
fill bucket to fill in my colour tones and used the gradient tool for the background.

My Pop Art #2

This is a more "cartoony" aproach to the pop art effect, I used the same software and tools as last time.
This is my friend Jamie taking a photo of me taking a photo of him,
I added the eye to show the camera is how photographers see the world,
which is how we capture great images.
I wanted to use this "cartoony Pop Art" effect for my album colour,
So after a few more researched ideas i will create another.

My Pop Art #1

This is my attempt at the pop art feel for a cover.
I used my friend Jake asleep in class and done it all on photoshop,
I used the pen tool and drew round the main outlines and features of the face
to make the face stand out and filled in with the bucket tool to get the
right colours to make the image complete.
To make it more human like I put the creases in to show more effect.
The Blue gradient makes it stand out a little bit more and I thought it was a nice finish.

Pop Art

Even though i said I wont be researching other genres, I lied, Because I'm thinking of doing this kind of art effect for a photo I will take, but made more dark and grimy so that it gives the right effect to show its still Hip Hop/Rap.
For this kind of genre of music its made really colourful and there's alot more detail in the image.
I would be using one person in my image and will definitely not be using bright colours.
The artist who done this is Julian Opie, he really creates colourful and outstanding, eye-catching images.

Strong Images

This is Ice Cubes famously known album cover for his album "Death Certificate".
It is a 16 track album but what I'm interested in is the image given and the way the colours and contrast stand out.
Photographed by Mario Castellanos, theres not much about him online or any books on him, but he's really into wild life and nature. So this is well out of his league but really done a great job for the Artist's cover. He has used a wide angle lens and brings out the misty grimey green colour to show he's obviously in the morgue, with Uncle Sam being a huge racist back in the day on his death bed and tagged. This is a really strong image given. One of my favourites of the genre.

Album Covers

I have started to research into album covers for my new project. I am going to be choosing from the list that my teacher has given me, I'm not into much of the indie and rock genres so I will chose a genre I am comfortable with and know I lot about which is Hip Hop/Rap.
I will research alot of albums that I think stand out in the mainstream HipHop industrie.
